Easy Oven Cleaning

This is definitely the most embarrassing post I have written yet. I have to admit something terrible. My oven hasn't been cleaned since we moved into this house.
On top of that, it wasn't clean when we moved in, so who knows that last time it's been done.

GROSS!!!! I know, don't judge me.

I could never get myself to get that nasty cleaner, let it smell up my house and then sit there and scrub the daylights out of my oven. I just didn't want to do that! Chemicals = YUCK!

Well, the other day, I looked in my oven and decided enough was enough. So I searched the world wide web for a solution that wouldn't leave me scrubbing and cleaning for hours.

I found the answer on one of my favorite blogs One Good Thing by Jillee and decided to try my hand at it. I changed and added a few steps to make it easier but all in all, I'm happy with my results.

Step 1) Preheat your oven to 180* and put a pot of water on the stove.

Step 2) When the oven is preheated and the water is boiling rapidly, turn the oven off and put the pot of water on the bottom rack in your oven. Then put 2 Cups of Ammonia in an oven safe bowl and place it on the top rack.

Step 3) Close the oven and let that sit overnight (I did this during the day so I only let it sit for 6 hours, but I recommend letting it go overnight)

Step 4) Open the oven and let it air out for 10 minutes. I am amazed how the ammonia doesn't smell anymore.

Step 5) Split the ammonia into two different bowls. In one bowl, add 1 TBSP of Dawn dish soap (optional) and warm/hot water to scrub down the oven (wear gloves for this part). I just used a regular disposable dish scrub pad. It didn't take much to get all the gunk loosened up. For the really bad burnt spots I used a plastic scraper to get it up.

Step 6) After the initial scrub down, I took the other half of the ammonia and added the warm/hot water to wash everything down.

That's it! Now, if your oven is younger than 15 years and has been cleaned more than twice in it's lifetime, it's going to look A LOT better than mine. For now, I will take my results with this old lady of an oven.

If you have a really stubborn, disgusting oven like mine and want it to be pristine. I advise you to use the triple threat (A miracle on white shirt armpit stains).

Mix Equal parts of Peroxide, Baking Soda and Dawn. Scrub the paste onto your oven. Let it sit and then clean it off.

I didn't go this route because it can be a pain to get it all cleaned up. It takes a while to get it "clean" and the baking soda likes to stick.

Now..... we can't forget the important OVEN RACKS!!

Clean your Oven Racks

This was another new thing I tried. It was easy and simple and did the job I was expecting.

Step 1) Fill up the tub with hot water, put in 5-6 dryer sheets and a couple Tablespoons of dawn (or non-scented castile soap) and put in the oven racks. Let that sit overnight as well.

Step 2) Lightly scrub the oven racks with the dryer sheets. The anti-static of the dryer sheets helps to detach the food from the oven racks. Super easy and a good use for all those dryer sheets I don't use anymore on my clothes ;)

Good luck and happy oven cleaning.

DIY Draino

So the bathtub was backed up after I gave my daughter a bath the other night and I knew it wasn't from my hair so it must just be clogged somewhere.

I vowed a long time ago to never use Draino again.

That stuff is nasty!! Not to mention, it is not good for our septic system. Even if you don't have a septic system. Everything that goes down the drain goes somewhere, and that is not something I want anywhere. So what was I going to do? Well, I looked under the sink and decided to try some things.

Easiest Budget method

Budget, (cringe)..... ugh what a pain in the butt. Well I'm here to say it doesn't have to be a pain.

I have been through a few classes telling you that credit cards are bad, debt is bad and we are a total failure when it comes to money. Well, I do agree that debt is bad, but I think there is a better way to approach spending and budgeting your family's money.

Spend less at the Grocery Store without Coupons

   Dear coupons,

I have tried to use you, and save money. But I just don't think it's working out. You are costing me time and money, and I'm pretty sure half the stuff I buy with you I don't really need. So I may use you one or twice again, but for now we are through!

Sincerely,
Frustrated Grocery Shopper

YES PLEASE! I hate grocery shopping. I hate the time, money and sanity it takes from me. I tried couponing to save money. But most coupons are for name brand things you can get a cheaper store brand item anyway. Or you just don't need the item in the first place. Or maybe, you walk out of the store with a whole bunch of toiletries and processed foods. Not what your family needs, I assure you.
Now if couponing works for you, then I am envious! You can use the method I am going to explain, and your coupons together to save even more money. So let's get to savings.
